Blast into the New Year with the Bold Sounds of Brass!
Maritime Brass Quintet to perform in Antigonish NS and Sackville NB in January.
HALIFAX, NS – Comprised of five of Canada’s finest brass players, the Maritime Brass Quintet has quickly been gaining recognition as a leading brass ensemble on the national scene. Artists Curtis Dietz and Richard Simoneau (trumpet), Gina Patterson (horn), Eric Mathis (trombone), and Bob Nicholson (tuba and bass trombone) have all held prestigious orchestral positions and performed with many of the world’s most recognized brass ensembles. Now stationed in the Maritimes, these five talented individuals have brought their unique experiences together to form a cutting edge brass quintet that has since been bringing joy to audiences throughout the Maritime region and beyond with its uplifting performances.
This month, the Maritime Brass Quintet will perform for the Antigonish Performing Arts Series at Immacaulata Hall, St. F. X. University on Saturday January 16th, 2016 at 8:00pm. They then head to Sackville, NB for a concert for the Mount Allison Performing Arts Series in Brunton Auditorium at 7:30pm on Sunday, January 17th, 2016. Their engaging program titled Classics for Brass, is a robust and artfully mixed cocktail featuring the best of brass repertoire including works by Samuel Scheidt, Eric Ewazen, Morley Calvert and more. To finish, the program is garnished with Canadian composer Howard Cable’s A Newfoundland Sketch – a work based on traditional folk songs which is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
The first ever Ensemble in Residence with Debut Atlantic, the Maritime Brass Quintet will perform concerts in all four Maritime Provinces throughout the 2015/16 season. In addition to their many concert engagements, the ensemble will be working with young students and performing at schools throughout the region as well as giving workshops for university level music students. The quintet will be involved in new community outreach initiatives including performances at Halifax Public Libraries, at Paul’s Hall in Glen Haven, NS as well as host a special workshop for the Yarmouth Citizens Band. The quintet will also participate in a videoconference session hosted by Newfoundland’s Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation (CDLI) which reaches thousands of students throughout Newfoundland and will be available for public viewing around the globe.

Biography– Maritime Brass Quintet
The Maritime Brass Quintet is renowned for high caliber chamber performances and appears regularly in concert halls, festivals and schools throughout the region. The group is comprised of five of Canada’s finest brass players: Curtis Dietz and Richard Simoneau (trumpet), Gina Patterson (horn), Eric Mathis (trombone) and Bob Nicholson (tuba & bass trombone).
Maritime Brass Quintet members have studied throughout North America and performed or held positions with many of the world’s leading ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony, Toronto Symphony, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Honolulu Symphony and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. They also have experience playing in numerous smaller groups and ensembles, including Foothills Brass, Northumberland Brass, Honolulu Brass Quintet, the Jive Kings and the Canadian Brass.
Since forming in the spring of 2011, the Maritime Brass Quintet embarked on a busy concert schedule and has been featured guests at many of the regions’ well-known concert series and performance venues: including the Scotia Festival of Music, the Music Room, Acadia University, University of Prince Edward Island, Universite de Moncton among others. They frequently collaborate with some of the regions finest musicians including Paul Halley and the King’s College Choir, Nick Halley and Capella Regalis, Jeff Joudrey and the Halifax Camerata, and in recital with Mark Duggan at the Scotia Festival of Music. They have also collaborated with Kings Chapel Choir and Capella Regalis and completed a recent tour with jazz pianist/composer David Braid.
All MBQ members are dedicated educators as well as players, and are committed to working with brass players of all ages.
