FROM CARNEGIE HALL TO ATLANTIC CANADA’S STAGES – ROLSTON STRING QUARTET TO DAZZLE WITH PRIZE WORTHY PERFORMANCES!
Wednesday, January 23th, 2019
HALIFAX, NS – On January 26th and 27th, the exquisite sounds of Rolston String Quartet will enthrall Nova Scotian audiences as they start the first of a three-part tour with Debut Atlantic.
Described by the Toronto Star as belonging “to a generation of string players performing at a level difficult to imagine in generations past”, the Rolston String Quartet has stormed onto the international classical music scene as the First Prize winner of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition. They are the only ensemble to be featured on CBC’s 2016 list of “Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30” and have toured extensively through Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada, the United States and Israel.
The Rolston String Quartet will begin their tour in Mahone Bay, NS performing on January 26th at 4:00 pm with Musique Royale at Cecilia’s Retreat. On January 27th at 2:00 pm, they are presented by King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal, NS.
In addition to concert engagements throughout their tour, Rolston String Quartet will be working with young students and performing at schools throughout the region. They will also take part in a webcast hosted by the Centre for Distance Learning and Education, which will be broadcast to schools throughout Newfoundland & Labrador, and will be available as a live streamed event.
Debut Atlantic wishes to recognize the partners and sponsors that come together to bring its artists to the region in communities and venues of all sizes. Touring these artists would not be possible without the generous support of sustaining partners including the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia and the Province of New Brunswick. Debut would also like to thank its educational partner the Nova Scotia Department of Education and its season partners including the Halifax Regional Municipality, The Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation, The Craig Foundation, Pink Larkin and Westmont Hospitality Group (Comfort Inn).
Please see the enclosed list of tour dates and artist biography and come share in an inspiring performance!

BIOGRAPHY
ROLSTON STRING QUARTET
Musical Toronto wrote The Rolston String Quartet “performed with a maturity and cohesion rivaling the best string quartets in the world.” Formed in 2013, the Rolston String quartet has stormed onto the international classical music scene as the First Prize winner of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition and of the 31st Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, Third Prize winner at the inaugural M-Prize Competition, and the Durosoir Prize at the 2016 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition. They are the only ensemble to be featured on CBC’s 2016 list of hot Canadian classical musicians under 30 and this year they were the recipient – and first international ensemble chosen for – the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America. Touring extensively through Germany, Italy, Austria, Canada, the United States and Israel, highlights of their tours include venues such as the Smithsonian, Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, Koerner Hall at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music and the Esterhazy Palace.
Described by the Toronto Star as belonging “to a generation of string players performing at a level difficult to imagine in generations past”, the Rolston String Quartet began as the Yale School of Music’s fellowship quartet-in-residence in the fall of 2017. They have also served as the graduate quartet-in-residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and have participated in residencies and fellowships at the Academie musicale de Villecroze, Aspen Music Festival, Banff Centre, McGill International String Quartet Academy, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Robert Mann String Quartet Institute, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, and the Yehudi Menuhin Chamber Music Festival. They currently serve as Graduate Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.
The Rolston String Quartet was formed in the summer of 2013 at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s Chamber Music Residency. They take their name from Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, founder and long-time director of Music and Sound Programs at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Luri Lee plays a Carlo Tononi violin, generously on loan from Shauna Rolston Shaw. Rolston String Quartet is endorsed by Jargar Strings of Denmark.
