ENGAGING VIOLIN-PIANO DUO SHARE MUSIC WITH NS AND NB!
HALIFAX, NS – Winner of the 32nd annual Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition, Carissa Klopoushak completed a Canada-wide début recital tour with pianist Philip Chiu in 2009. Together, they have also been featured in recital at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and on the airwaves of the CBC.
Originally from Saskatoon, Carissa was working towards a bachelor’s degree at the University of Saskatchewan when she won the position of Principal Second Violin with the Saskatoon Symphony. She is still active in the prairie music scene as an Artistic Director with the Ritornello Chamber Music Festival and as a performer with the Regina-based Boundary Ensemble.
Ms. Klopoushak has recently completed a doctorate in violin performance from McGill University in Montreal, where she currently teaches violin and chamber music.
An exceedingly sociable pianist, Philip concertizes extensively as one of Canada’s most sought-after chamber musicians. He has appeared in recitals with leading musicians of the world stage, including Matt Haimovitz, Jonathan Crow, and Raphael Wallfisch. Dedicated to elevating the standard and art of collaborative piano, Mr. Chiu is the creator and director of the new Collaborative Piano Program at the Domaine Forget International Festival and Academy.
Their concert program will feature works by French Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel, in addition to Prokofiev, Janáček, and Canadian composer, Oskar Morawetz.
Alongside their concert schedule, Ms. Klopoushak and Mr. Chiu will be visiting a number of schools throughout the region as part of Debut Atlantic’s Education and Engagement program. The pair will also participate in a videoconference with students throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in partnership with Newfoundland’s Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation. This session will take place Monday, November 18 at 11:30am AST and will also be available to students across Atlantic Canada via webcast.
Enclosed is a list of tour dates for Ms. Klopoushak and Mr. Chiu’s concerts.
One of the most respected music touring organizations in the country, Debut Atlantic’s first season in 1979 featured then-emerging and still-unknown artists, pianist Jon Kimura Parker, tenor Ben Heppner, and Canada’s Baroque orchestra Tafelmusik.
