PAYADORA’S TANGOMANIA SET TO WEAVE PASSION AND VIRTUOSITY ACROSS ATLANTIC CANADA
K’JIUPUKTUK/HALIFAX, NS – It takes more than two to tango – just ask Canada’s premiere tango ensemble, Payadora.
Prepare for an electrifying musical experience as Payadora, the award-winning and internationally acclaimed ensemble, tours Atlantic Canada with Debut Atlantic from October 11-27, 2024, and captivates audiences with their unique take on South American folk music. Drawing influences from Argentina to Eastern Europe and paying homage to the legendary Astor Piazzolla, Payadora plays the tango with an authenticity that is both steamy and sophisticated. Their artistry has garnered praise from critics and fans alike, with The Ottawa Citizen hailing them as a “World Class Contemporary Chamber Ensemble” and The WholeNote declaring them a “Superstar group!”. Renowned for their innovative compositions and masterful arrangements, Payadora is set to bring their vibrant, playful, and virtuosic sound to the stage in ten unmissable performance – eight in Nova Scotia and two in New Brunswick – that will have audiences on their feet.
Don’t miss your chance to experience the unparalleled artistry of Payadora as they tour for two weeks with Debut Atlantic. The tour kicks off on Friday, October 21, in Mahone Bay, NS, at Cecilia’s Retreat with a 7:00pm performance, setting the stage for a series of captivating shows. The following day, Sunday, October 13, they’ll enchant audiences in Bertrand, NB, at Musique Saint-Joachim with a 2:00pm afternoon concert. Their journey continues to Moncton, NB, where they will perform at Théâtre Capitol Theatre’s Empress Theatre on Wednesday, October 16, at 7:30pm, followed by a show in Truro, NS, at The Marigold Centre on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00pm. On Friday, October 18, Payadora will dazzle the crowd at the Antigonish Performing Arts Series in Antigonish, NS, at 7:30pm, before moving to Dartmouth, NS, where they’ll grace the stage at Woodlawn United Church on Saturday, October 19, at 7:00pm. The ensemble will then bring their unique sound to Wolfville, NS, at the Acadia Performing Arts Series Festival Theatre on Sunday, October 20, at 7:30pm. As the second week unfolds, Payadora will perform at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, October 23, at 7:30pm, and then at King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal, NS, on Friday, October 25, at 7:30pm. They’ll wrap up their Debut Atlantic tour on Sunday, October 27, with a spectacular performance at Music at Trinity in Amherst, NS, at 3:00pm.

In addition to concert engagements, Payadora will be working with young students through the Debut Goes to School! program. This season, Debut Goes to School offers students throughout Atlantic Canada in-person access to outstanding classical and global music artists. Through this program, students are provided the opportunity to participate in live, interactive learning sessions and other events for various age groups and levels of ability.

BIOGRAPHY—PAYADORA
Since 2013, Payadora has been redefining Argentinian and Uruguayan music traditions with a unique fusion of classical, jazz, and global influences. Renowned for their innovative reinterpretations of tangos, milongas, waltzes, and folk styles, the ensemble has earned acclaim from the Argentinian Consulate in Toronto and performed at top venues like the National Arts Centre and Vancouver Island’s MusicFest.
Their latest album, “Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango,” reached #1 on the World Music Charts in Europe and garnered praise from the BBC, CBC, and NPR. The album also won the German World Music Award and “Best New Piece” at the 2023 Yiddish Music Awards.
Supported by grants from the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, and Canada Council for the Arts, Payadora continues to push the boundaries of tango through dynamic performances and global tours, celebrated for their artistry, virtuosity, and passion.
