VISIONS FROM THE OTHER SIDE – DUO CORDELIA SET TO ENRICH ATLANTIC CANADA WITH MUSICAL TREASURES
K’JIUPUKTUK/HALIFAX, NS – The musical experience of ‘De l’autre côté du miroir’ (Visions from the Other Side), as imagined and presented by Duo Cordelia, turns the conventional markers of the chamber music concert on its head. Contemplation, humour, and delight are the order of the day as the two seasoned musicians of this violin-piano ensemble take their audience on an innovative musical adventure featuring a diverse repertoire drawn from the works of revolutionary or politically committed composers of their time, as well as original compositions by violinist Vanessa Marcoux. Duo Cordelia is set to embark on a two-week tour with Debut Atlantic, including seven concerts in Nova Scotia. Touring between February 9-23, 2024, they will enthrall audiences with music inspired by the resilience of those artists whom escape to fabulous musical landscapes was the only possible way out of the realities of their time.
Debut Atlantic is thrilled to present high-calibre artists to audiences across Atlantic Canada. Duo Cordelia will begin their tour in Antigonish, NS with the Antigonish Performing Arts Series on Friday, February 9th at 7:30pm. Next, they head over to Annapolis Royal, NS where they will appear at King’s Theatre on Sunday, February 11th at 3:00pm. Afterwards, they are traveling to Yarmouth, NS for two performances with the Hear! Here! Society! on Wednesday, February 14th – 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Duo Cordelia then travels to Dartmouth, NS for a 7:00pm concert on Friday, February 16th with the Dartmouth Community Concert Association. The following day, Saturday, February 17th, Duo Cordelia will appear with Musique Royale in Mahone Bay, NS for a morning performance at 11:00am. Next, they travel to Wolfville, NS, where they will appear at Sunday Music in the Garden Room on Sunday, February 18th for a 2:00pm performance. Duo Cordelia finishes their Debut Atlantic tour on Thursday, February 22nd at 7:30pm, where they will perform in Pictou, NS at The River Gallery on Water Street as part of the deCoste Centre for Art & Creativity’s “On the Road” series.
In addition to concert engagements, Duo Cordelia will be working with young students through the Debut Goes to School! program. This season, Debut Goes to School offers students throughout Atlantic Canada in-person access to outstanding classical and global music artists. Through this program, students are provided the opportunity to participate in live, interactive learning sessions and other events for various age groups and levels of ability.
Debut Atlantic wants to recognize the partners and sponsors that come together to bring these incredible artists to communities and venues of all sizes across our region. It would not be possible without the generous support of sustaining partners, including the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia, and the Province of New Brunswick. Debut would also like to thank its educational partner, the Nova Scotia Department of Education; and its season partners, including the Halifax Regional Municipality, The Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation, Support4Culture, the Craig Foundation, Pink Larkin, Halcraft Printers, Strategic Arts Management, and InnVest Hotels (Comfort Inn).

BIOGRAPHY—Duo Cordelia
Formed in 2016, Duo Cordelia features violinist and composer Vanessa Marcoux and pianist Marie-Christine Poirier. The ensemble is very active on the Canadian classical music scene and is being regularly invited to perform across Canada. The two musicians widen the framework of their respective instruments by ushering them into new territory. The Duo’s mission is to expand the possibilities within the medium of the classical concert by introducing improvisation, an array of exciting repertoire from the 20th and 21st century, arrangements of traditional melodies and original compositions by Vanessa. This rich combination of classical repertoire and lesser-known works allows the listener to draw new bridges between musical universes that would otherwise be dissociated. The result is a touching and unique concert experience, which goes straight to the heart of our deep connection with music. The Duo has received numerous grants from the Quebec and Canada Arts Councils. Their first album will be released in the winter of 2024.
